چکیده

Concurrent Engineering (CE) is an organisational arrangement that systematically employs a set of functional disciplines to integrate and simultaneously perform all the tasks that yields to a product satisfying a known list of customer needs. Its chief goals are to shorten the products’ time to market, increase their quality and performance, and reduce their overall life cycle costs, from conception through disposal. As for Axiomatic Design (AD), it was developed by N.P. Suh at the M.I.T., in the late 1970s, to be used as a systematic model for engineering education and practice. Its underlying hypothesis is that there exist fundamental principles that govern good design practice. Starting from such a simple reasoning, AD provides a general framework to assist in the decision making of any design process, offering a means to show in detail and to assess the existing interplay between the design goals and the tentative solutions at any time in the design process. This paper is an attempt to show how AD can be used to implement a dependable Concurrent Engineering environment.

A Lean Manufacturing Roadmap for an Automotive Body Assembly Line within Axiomatic Design Framework

In this paper we are to present a practical application of Axiomatic Design (AD) methodology, as a roadmap to lean production, in redesigning a car body assembly line. Axiomatic Design theory provides a framework to simplify the whole problem. According to the AD principles, a hierarchical structure has been developed. The developed structure originated in lean manufacturing principles and exis...

On Validating Engineering Design Decision Support Tools

In this article, an argument for validation of design–decision methods is presented. In the process of justifying the need for validation, several criteria for a valid design–decision method are introduced. These criteria represent a starting point from which the research community can continue to debate and ponder the validation issue. Under these criteria, a critical empirical investigation o...

Systems Design Engineering

Design is the creative process by which our understanding of logic and science is joined with our understanding of human needs and wants to conceive and refine artifacts that serve specific human purposes. Design is central to the practice of systems engineering and systems engineers understand that design is a creative, iterative, decision-making process. In this paper, we provide an overview ...

Innovative Product and Network of Partners Co-design: Context, Problems, and Some Exploratory Results

Innovative product development and in-house process design have been largely studied and methods, such as concurrent engineering, integrated product development, or dynamic product development are set up to answer real needs of industrialists. However, no innovative product can be put on the market without a well-structured and well-organized network of partners. This simple idea deeply influen...
